The secret to building muscle mass...

The Real Secret to Building Muscle Mass
Many different methods are offered for building muscle mass. For example, eccentric exercises are often called the "forgotten method" for muscle development. Circuit training is also said to offer a solution. And so, every week, I hear, see, and read about a wide variety of methods that are supposed to help you become more muscular.
What's wrong with these methods? Absolutely nothing. They can undoubtedly do something for your muscle development. However, I do believe we're too quick to seek solutions in alternative forms of training while we haven't mastered the fundamental concepts of "classical" training. When you understand these concepts, how they manifest in and around your training, and can consciously act accordingly, you'll notice that you'll develop more muscle mass.
The fundamental concepts

-To get a more muscular body you have to make it produce power.

-To be able to produce power, your body must first recover.

-To help your body recover, you need to provide it with the right fuel.

Power
Strength training is the phase in which your body generates power. During this phase, the exertion disrupts your body's homeostasis (balance), which leads to the need for recovery. This means you can push your muscles quite hard each workout. You don't have to train to failure every workout, but at least make sure you can barely manage your last set.
When your body is exhausted from an intense strength workout, it wants to recover. However, your body registers your strength training as a new situation it suddenly finds itself in. Your body doesn't want to be thrown off balance again this time during strength training, so it will restore itself to a higher homeostasis than it was in before the workout. To achieve this, your body needs more muscle mass. When you train for muscle mass, your muscles will need 48-72 hours to recover from your workout. Keep this in mind, because your muscles really need this recovery to grow.
Fuel
To develop more muscle mass during the recovery period, your body needs fuel. This fuel comes from food. Your body uses food for more than just that. Food also provides the energy for your daily activities. If you also want to develop muscle mass, you'll need to eat more than before (unless you were already eating too much). Therefore, it's advisable to research how much you need to eat to achieve this.
