Fitness isn't a competition, or is it?

HYROX is a global fitness race that's becoming increasingly popular. The competition combines cardio and strength training, making it a true physical and mental challenge. Once the starting gun sounds, the participants must first run a kilometer, then arrive at the first strength exercise. This cycle repeats no fewer than eight times.

The strength exercises consist of:

Ski Erg

The first exercise you'll encounter is the Ski Erg. You'll cover 1000 meters of this exercise, which primarily targets your arms. If you perform it correctly, you'll also feel the muscles in your lower body.

Sled Push

After running another kilometer, you arrive at the second exercise: the Sled Push. The name already gives a hint of what you're supposed to do. Weights are pushed via a sled. For this exercise, it's crucial to wear shoes with sufficient grip to prevent slipping.

Sled Pull

The third exercise takes place at the same spot where you just pushed the sled. However, with the Sled Pull, the goal is to pull the sled back to the spot where you started.

Burpee Broad Jumps

Perhaps the most well-known exercise in the fitness world, the burpee. This exercise involves covering a certain number of meters by doing burpees. The further you jump forward, the fewer you have to do.

Rowing

Once you've reached exercise five, it's time to row. You'll need to cover 1000 meters. Want to practice at home? Go to https://gorillasports.nl/Cardio/Roeimachines to get a rowing machine.

Farmers carry

This exercise is designed to train the upper back muscles, also known as the trapezius. It also works your core and forearms. Practice it weekly when you come home with your heavy shopping bags.

Sandbag Lunges

The strength exercises are almost over; after this, you only have one more to do. Before you can continue, you have to do lunges with different weights on your back. Depending on the class division, lunges must be done with 10, 20, or 30 kilos.

Wall Balls

The final exercise! Take another deep breath and start throwing those heavy balls against the wall a certain number of times...

The format is constantly expanding, and the race can be done in various ways. Solo, as a duo, or as a team. Men and women can complete the race separately, but mixed races are also allowed. There are even divisions and championships for each race! Races are held worldwide, with races scheduled in November and December in Essen, London, Dallas, Hamburg, Madrid, Frankfurt, and Los Angeles. The next race in the Netherlands will take place in Maastricht on January 21, 2023.
